You don’t want to miss this month’s podcast as the discovery of manna is publicly presented for the first time. Jennifer and I have a lively discussion that brings to light many aspects of the manna discovery which are found in the new book, Bread from Heaven: the Manna Mystery Solved.
The physical substance of manna, described in the ancient Old Testament, caused the Israelites to ask the question, “Manna?” or, “What is it?”
The answer to this question has been a mystery for over four-and-a-half thousand years.
Some have claimed that manna was secreted by insects. Others have, sadly, relegated the manna account to a purely mythological category. Still others say that manna was purely miraculous, and it is not a physical substance that can be investigated.
Manna is a mystery no longer. Using the data set provided by the biblical text, Dr. Gerald Aardsma is the first person to ever answer the ancient question, “What is it?” We can now understand not only what manna was, but also how it was produced, why it was absent on the Sabbath, and more.
Understanding how God used His natural world to produce manna in the wilderness enables us to produce manna today. Now we can experience manna firsthand: how it looks, feels, smells, tastes, and behaves in different environments.
The biblical account is simply historical.

So would that mean manna was there all along?

The manna would have appeared in the mornings in the Sinai wilderness when the Israelites had gotten their camp in an ordered arrangement, the tent city surrounding the pillar of cloud and fire (and eventually the tabernacle), and the vast herds and flocks surrounding the tent city each evening. The chemistry that produces what the Israelites called manna would have only taken place after God had led this massive group of people and livestock into these conditions and in this order. Dr. Aardsma goes into lots of detail on this in his book “Bread From Heaven, The Manna Mystery Solved.” We will talk more about this next month on part 2 of our podcast introducing the manna discovery.
