“Why Daddy?”
It’s a familiar question for any man who has the privilege of being called “Dad.” And it’s not an easy one.

It’s especially hard when you live in what many have been labeling as “clown world”. I’m sure you would agree that crazy things are going on in this world right now. There are many things we don’t know, things we have never heard before, and things that are just downright bizarre. We can speculate over a thousand reports and scenarios concerning everything from artificial intelligence to cultural breakdown to gender confusion to vaccinations to possible extra-terrestrials among us to quantum theory to Big Tech control and surveillance and on and on. In our day of internet information, it is more likely that even some things we always believed and had confidence in come crashing down in front of us, which can really give a person a good shake up.
No, we don’t know where all of this is headed. Different reliable sources are saying different things and coming to very different conclusions. Everything is being questioned. I remember my Dad saying about twenty years ago, “It just seems like everything is being questioned now.” Twenty years later the questioning has only snowballed and now very little seems stable. One thing that’s clear is that nothing presently seems to be very clear. Our civilization, even with all of the advancements, is presently in a dense fog. As we keep moving forward, we cannot see what is ahead, but we can all sense that big changes seem to be on the horizon, and there is no going back. I know this all sounds gloomy and fatalistic, but I do believe that ultimately these things will all work together for good. It seems an age is ending, and I believe good things are on the horizon for the meek. However, times of transition are never much fun and often quite scary.
And if we adults think things are weird for us, what must the children be thinking who are listening in to all the big people in their lives who are supposed to know some stuff and have the answers?
For children, life in general is unknown and often scary, even if you don’t live in “clown world”. The great comfort for children is to have the security that, though they sure don’t know what to do about a lot of scary things in their world, their Daddy sure does, and so all is well with him in charge. Children have always been afraid at times, and Daddies have always provided security.
Of course, us Daddies know that often we really don’t know what to do about some of the scary things, but this is the great comfort of the child of God—the knowledge that our Father does know all, has all things in control, and we can look to Him for inner security, and for direction.
Even in the fog we fathers can hold tightly to the hands of our loved ones, keep our focus on loving the Lord our God with all of our hearts, loving our neighbor as ourselves, faithfully nurturing and defending our own little hill, and just doing what we have been called to do, as someone put it, “pulling my lever” each day. That’s it. Through our simple obedience our Father will give us fathers the strength to be faithful, fruitful, strong, loving, and decisive in our day.
There sure are a lot of things I don’t know. But my Father does, so all is well. I pray that those who do not know the Father will run to Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. Times like this help us all realize how much we need a good Daddy who really does know the end from the beginning.
