God of the Atom (by Olivia Hall)

As a homeschooling family, my wife will occasionally take advantage of online videos as a tool of instruction in a certain subject. Videos can be especially good for peaking a child’s interest in the sciences. The Moody Institute of Science produced a number of educational videos in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s that show how the wonders of creation reveal the majesty of God.

Our daughter Olivia (age 10) wrote a brief report showing her understanding of the video (linked below) about atoms, atomic energy, and the atomic bomb (which is, of course, both amazing and frightening). She enjoys writing assignments as part of her schooling. (This cannot be said of all students 🙂)

I thought readers of this blog would enjoy reading her report.

So what is atomic energy? Well, it has to do with an atom.

What is an atom? An atom is a tiny molecule that everyone and everything is made out of. In fact, did you know that an atom is the source of all power?

Let’s get back to our first question. What is atomic energy? Atomic energy is when an atom splits apart. In 1945 some scientists figured out how to split an atom, which created the atomic bomb. Now, as you know, the atomic bomb was a very powerful thing. It ended the war against Japan.

But through all of this we can know that we have some hope. We have a choice, life or death, and we have a God of salvation Who we can trust in.

Amen to that! I have attached a link below to the “God of the Atom” video. You can view all nineteen of these videos online, or you can purchase the set of DVDs here.
